I am trying to dimension an activated charcoal adsorber to remove ambient VOCs before the air enters a system where I will collect plant volatiles. Can anyone provide information on the required contact time of air and activated charcoal? How much activated charcoal do I need per volume of air?
See the book by Cooper and Alley, Air Pollution Control. A design Approach 2nd Ed (1994), Chapter 12, You need to know the solute and the isotherm on coal. But you will find a generailsed isotherm on activated coal in the book. If you need to calculate time between regenaration cycles, see McCabe et al, Unit Operations in Chem Eng, the Chapter on Adsorption. McGraw Hill 1993.You will find there a couple of good examples.

Wark, Warner, and Davis. Air Pollution - It's origin and control (3rd Ed.) also has a chapter on VOC control with isotherms for activated carbon.
I agree with Prof E.Vance recommendation. I know the 2nd Ed of Wark-Warner. If I was to use a method for how much carbon to use I would calculate wit Cooper and Alley. For calculating the time for bed exhaustion I would use the Wark method with a Freundlich iostherm on carbon for your VOC. If a linear isotherm can be used, I would use the McCabe method. I suggest that tou follow the examples solved given in these books.
Not and answer but a follow up question, Does the literature listed above also have recommendations for disposal - or breaking down of the VOCs 'saturated' charcoal into inert (?) / harmless constituents?
