This is one paper that provides the the classical FHD formula ( -∑ pi loge pi)  and recommends using proportion of horizontal vegetation

Others recommend using the Shannon index

I am confused as to which approach to use. Further I have height percentiles (from LasTools). Is there any way of using these to calculate FHD?
