I am conducting a study in a developing country and I want to know if urban resident travellers have been categorized to types or described in literature.
Dear Dr Akpan Toyin Akpan , You can easily find it in most Tourism and Hospitality books or journals. However, If you looking for Muslim traveller Typology, then kindly check the following article: https://digitalcommons.usf.edu/m3publishing/vol16/iss9781955833080/25/
The First definition considers tourists (that spend nights in hotels or BB) and city users (that stay in a Place but do not live there). Beyond this definition we can consider the content - AIM of the visit or stay, and so there are many kinds of categories: culture tourists or users, event tourists, open air and sport, health and rehabilitation, meeting and congress, business vs leisure, etc. Some Bibliography includes holger Preuss: the economy of the Olympic games, Mike Weed: Olympic tourism, Getz: mega events, Maurice Roche: Mega events and modernity, and other authors involved in Eventful Cities
There are more than one theory, but to be a tourist you have to spend at least 24hours in a place, out of your home city. There are many authors you can check - start with The World Tourism Organization theory. You can also use following:
"Tourism Development – Douglas Pearce"
"Tourism Planning - Clare Gunn"
"Boniface, Chris Cooper – The Geography of Travel Industry",,,,
Also, there are different types of Tourism, as other colleagues have already mentioned.
The Tirthana typology of tourism is a classification system which categorizes tourism according to its purpose or motivation. The term "Tirthana" comes from the Sanskrit word for pilgrimage, and the typology was developed in India. There are so many types of tourism in the Tirthana typology.
