The answer is not a simple one. On one side, It depends from the university where you want to apply. On the other side, it also depends if the position is only for research or only for teaching or it it is a teaching/research position. I would suggest that you approach the administrators of the university that you are interested in and ask for the protocol(s) concerning qualifications and duties of different positions. It is also a good idea to give a look to CVs of colleagues holding associate or full professor positions in the universities that you are interested in. Still, an "excellent" CV is not a key to success because competition for positions may include, in addition, recommendation letters on your professional performance, your personality and how you interact with colleagues and students, how you deliver your work, talks, conferences, etc. It is a complex process that includes different aspects everywhere in the world.
Usually it is not a matter of quantity, but quality. And the quality is measured, for example, by the h-index or cumulative impact factor. In addition to the publication, didactic and organizational merits are also important.
I think that as it has a very relative response, I recommend that a scientist should always be publishing, always within the ethical guidelines, carry out research in collaboration with other researchers, apply to all foundations with project proposals, that will help you to be more prepared and have more opportunities to get the position of teacher. Do not be afraid to apply, many times the position of professor does not always win the one that has more number of articles, much is taken into account the research perspectives.
The answer will vary with the University you apply in. Also it depends on the position, is it research or teaching or both. You should approach the university that you are interested in. You can also check the CVs of associate or full professor positions in the universities that you are interested in. Also many factors like recommendation letters on your professional performance, your personality and how you interact with colleagues and students, how you deliver your work, talks, conferences, etc. are very important. As per India, UGC Act you need to have minimum of Five Good Publications since the period the teacher is placed in Stage 3 (Assistant Professor). Here, Good Publication means Impact Factor.
