I have often times got references from the reference section of an article that I read. I then search for these citations and go on to read them. My question is "Do I have an obligation to also cite the first article if, in the end, I find the second reference more suitable?
Can cite both, can paraphrase from the first article and cite the second or both if you like or only the the last one, what is important is that all works consulted must be cited within body of paper and in the references. To avoid accusation of plagiarism you can always paraphrase works utilized and cite source.
In my opinion all the articles which really have some importance and relevance to your manuscript must be cited.
