I want to check the different interferon and cytokines level in diseased person blood serum or plasma. Unfortunately the on-spot test facility is not available at sample collection site. So my question is that how can I store the blood samples for test (conditions). Is -20C temp will be sufficient to store the serum/plasma for long term preservation. Please any one guide me.
No. At room temp for a day or two you may see a dramatic effect on concentration and activity of cytokines. You should not store serum or plasma in -20C for long periods of time, if it's just a week then that would be fine. But, for months or years I use a -80C which has worked well at stabilizing proteins for detecting proteins. Though some of my collaborators like using nitrogen. There have been numerous studies regarding this subject that I recommend you read. In general, most people agree that -80C to -180C storage is necessary. Also don't freeze thaw.

I have a question regarding same issue...After I did Ficoll separation for blood samples of breast cancer patients (collected in EDTA tubes) I kept the above clear plasma layer in falcon tubes at freezer of -20 degree celsius for only 1 month without several freezing or thawing .....I thawed them yesterday to find a viscous white clumps of mucosal consistency as in photo ...what is that ?????
