It depends upon the Journal

If it is a journal of Springer or Elsevier then it takes upto one year for review.

Paid journals normally provide the reviews faster from 15 days to 2 months.

@Wojciech, I sent a paper to a Scopus database international journal. The reviews came back in about 2 months. Please write and remind them. Good luck Wojciech.

This exaggerated delay not find understandable reasons. I believe that 06 months would be a period, more than enough, so that the author received comments on the article submitted for publication

@Wojciech, do not wait more than six months, as @Nelson suggested! Stay in touch with them, and, if there is no response from Journal, submit to another one! Do not waste Your valuable time!

Dear Wojciech: Personally I wait about 2 months and a maximum of 3 months. In most cases I have received responses in this time period. Still there is no response, better to send a reminder.

Dear All, I am associated editor of an ISI journal of Elsevier and I am charged of handling a increasing bunch of manuscripts that are submitted. I am quite busy for this and I do my very best, however the limiting factor is not me, but rather: first, to find a colleague who will accept to serve as a reviewer (it is increasingly hard to find, even though the editor system can help a lot in this respect); secondly, the response time of the reviewers themselves, who usually take all the time assigned to respond (and sometime even more so that they might be un-invited). So I really cannot reduce the time for handling. If reviews could be sent earlier than expected that would clearly decrease the handling time. But who is willing to do that? Honestly speaking, I am looking for potential reviewers also here in RG to help me in this respect. Would you be please one of these?

I wrote few reviews for "Information Sciences" and "International Journal of Fuzzy Systems". My reviews were always submitted as quickly as possible (from 2 weeks to 6 weeks). If you need a potential reviewer, I can help you. Of course, if your journal is related with my abilities.

Advancement in Science depends on Research publishing that, in turn, depends on Reviewer's availability. Who is willing to contribute in this respect?

I do not understand, I've been censored ..... I though that RG was a place of freedom....apparently is it not that way?

I tried twice to place a new question on RG on the same issue like the post before and twice an editor deleted it....... what's wrong with it?

If everything would go through RG for free, how many jobs would be lost?

Marcel, I do not think so, I AM IN A JOURNAL AS ASSOCIATE EDITOR, to be a reviewer is not a job, it is on voluntary basis and none is paid for that! I was asking for reviewers to join in to promote the journal. There is no job to preserve, on the contrary, there are jobs to create!

Two or three of my questions have been deleted by an anonymous editor until now. They referred to the RG policy as a reason. It occurred that some question owners asked me to delete one or two of my answers because he was frightened his question would be deleted. It is a bit strange...

I think your question and intention was wholly normal. I cannot understand the motive of deletion. We should be familiarized with the idea RG belongs also to our mainstream world with its irrationality.

You were looking for reviewers for a difficult job. It is hard to find suitable candidates. When I asked anything which needed a bit of efforts or concentration most of the RG participants remained silent. You were too optimistic.

Patrick you are perfectly right if a ms has to be rejected then it has to be done soon so you can give the chance to Authors to find another journal. I do it when it is the case. Review time: here we go back to my question that was really serious. It is increasingly hard to find reviewers available expert in different topics. That is due to both the increasing number of journals (mainly open-access) and the number of manuscripts, which is more like a full increasing wave! That is why it takes too long for having an answer from a journal. That is why I do not understand why I have been censored.

Andràs probably you are right, I have been too optimistic, but I tried to give some result of what usually happens here, where people freely provide their opinion, suggestions, advices.

Thank you all for your opinions. I would like to ask what we should do if journal does not give an answer to your inquiries (reminder)? I understand that sometimes reviews can take a lot of time, but what if journal does not contact with us?

You could send a friendly reminder by stating that you are going to withdraw your manuscript to submit in other appropriate journal.

@ Patrick: I do not think so...if the editors are not responding, we have all the rights to withdraw or cancel our own research manuscript with an email notification and we can submit in an another journal. Or we will have plenty of time to deny the offer of publishing during the review process.

If some of them are there, they must be up to date, otherwise it is not at all good to keep the valuable work of researchers for ever. :)

Likewise, once I have withdrawn/cancelled my paper from a journal and published in a journal with better reputation than the previous one. In an another instance, the editor took initiative to speed up the review process upon my notification.

Yes, I think that Lachezar opinion strikes the heart of the matter. However, in many countries exist systems to assess the work of scientists. These systems restrict the possible choice. If you publish in a journal outside the list, your work will be negative rating (in your country). Therefore, we must publish in so-called good journal, and It is correlated very often with impact factor (even in the ResearchGate case). So, do we have free choice?

By the way, I sent the manuscript to the journal, which promised that the average time between submission and the final decision is 46 days. Finally, I was waiting 180 days (with few reminders).

I believe that three months would be an ideal time, but how much wait depends on how much I want to publish in that journal.
