When deep freezer is down, how long is it safe to keep cells in dry ice? We have few experience keeping them over 1 or 2 days. Someone says that CO2 itself is harmful when exposed over several days.
I suggest you to contact with my colleague Dr. Antonio Sánchez ([email protected]), from the Area of Genetics of my faculty; he has experience with inter-continental exchange of celular lines; I hope he'll answer you
Some of deep freezer have a back up of co2 when the electricity is off.But it can support for 1-2 days.I think it can safe even the temperature is over then -80
Dry ice forms the crystal of cells due to which cells become die but we kept cells on dry ice when we make 60% glycerol stocks. Its good method for cell storage.
It depends upon what kind of cells you are going to keep . Embryo can remain viable at least for 4-6 monthes in liquid nitrogen while sperm cell and fibroblast can survive for 2-3 weeks.
Thank you for your comments to all. Recently our laboratory has moved. During transportation some of the frozen cell stocks were kept in dry ice. Up to now 293 cells or THP-1 cells were viable. Because the capacity of the liquid nitrogen tank is limited, i wanted to know whether rescue by dry ice could be prolonged in emergency case.
