The first wave was overwhelming. We learnt and calibrated the course with the surge.
Things are organised and protocolised during second wave.
The treatment, testing and, infection control is now evidence based.

I worked in the ER as a nurse during round one in NYC. I've been a nurse for 23 years and a USAF Veteran and nothing had prepared me for what I witnessed. I will admit I cried in my car before my shift many times. It was brutal. We were intubating multiple people simultaneously. Patients were dying left and right. Everything happened so quickly. Protocols that were in place 10 minutes ago changed. It was a learning curve for sure. The amount of deaths and not having enough body bags was disturbing in itself.
I think our ER was already a large and amazing family to begin with pre COVID so, this brought us closer from MDs, to PAs, NPs, RNs, NAs, PCTs, Security, Housekeeping, transport, our secretaries, registration and our research assistants. We did not switch to team nursing as some institutions did. But, there was a team effort from all of us. We supported each other. This was a new level of what our ER was already on a regular day... organized chaos. This pandemic brought it to a new level... COVID chaos. I think Governor Cuomo (NY) had a good plan and strategy that helped our ER immensely which was increasing the capacity hospitals by 50% state wide. These patients were getting beds and not staying in the ED long at all. It was like the ER should be ran. But, the shear volume we were getting was overwhelming in itself. I can't imagine keeping those same patients and the influx at the same time. That's a complete sandwich effect.
I moved away from bedside nursing for round 2. I am grateful for that opportunity. I praise everyone's effects and work during this pandemic.. It's a war like no other that we have seen in our lifetimes.

@Tanya Brett,Thank you! for sharing your experience,ER seems to be a pandemic chaos. Many of us would think that the second way, would be treated more carefully, we had a great influx of positive patients, I am looking forward to hear more stories about the current situation.
