The knowledge of tribology is useful in reducing the unnecessary friction and wear between two rubbings surfaces or tribopair. Using tribology appropriate lubricant and lubrication mechanism can be adopted to minimize the friction and eliminate wear which would reduce the wastage of energy and enhance working life of tribopair.

Friction and wear cannot be correlated always, a low friction coefficient of friction (COF) material may give high wear rate than a high COF material. So talking in terms of energy conservation the best part will be minimize the frictional power loss and not to directly concentrate on wear loss.
COF of material can be improved in several ways. Some of them include modifying the surafce, using lubrication, adding fillers etc.
In short where ever we have contact surfaces that are in relative motion there will be friction and there will be power loss due to friction. So a tribologist can look into these areas to improve the COF and to reduce frictional loss there by conserving energy.
Friction is a process that could be considered as the one having double meaning in terms of transmitted power and absorbed energy. Reducing friction and wear is useful for bearings while for braking systems it is more high friction coefficient constancy that matters. In the latter case, therefore, the friction power absorbtion (dissipation) should be as high as possible. "Tribology" means it deals with the friction, wear, and lubrication. whenever two solid surfaces are in sliding contact that moment friction and wear will occur. In addition, optimizing the process parameters (Load, sliding velocity, temp, environment and contact surface roughness) is important for controlling the tribological behaviors. Let us discuss this issue from the aspects of machining. If with application of suitable coolant-lubricant, the apparent coefficient of friction at the chip tool interface can be reduced, it would lead to less hinderance to the chip flow. This will provide less thickening of the chip, less deformation, and less cutting forces and associated cutting power. Thus, appropriate tribological condition in machining would result in less energy consumption.
Now instead of application of coolant-lubricant, one can reduce the friction at the chip-tool interface by application of suitable anti-friction coating on the cutting tool. The earliest such coating was TiN. Nowadays, hybrid coatings like TiN + MoS2, TiN + WS2, TiAlN + MoS2/WS2 are being attempted to achieve similar reduction in energy consumption along with enhancement of productivity. Dry turning using such coated tools also saves the environmental cost of manufacturing activity.
