How is the weighted average position of an overlapping band system calculated (Raman spectrum) ?

I found few papers mentioning the weighted average position and giving a somewhat average value of Raman shift for the whole material. How is this calculated and how accurate is such an averaging for the purpose of knowing the phonon energy of the material?
