I'm doing research work with hybrid systems and I wish to include a study on the performance of lithium battery into those systems, but I can't find any work related to it in Brazil. I wish to find a case study about this even if it wasn´t with hybrid systems. I thank you very much if someone can help.
Do you use RetScreen or HOMER software in your study? It seems to me that both programs have possibility to calculate an effect from battery on a hybryd system.
Hi Luciana, Lithium batteries are not particularly suitable for these systems. The reason being, that they are not suited to deep discharge. Lithium batteries will be damaged beyond repair if discharged beyond the safe threshold, 2.6V for LiPo or LiIon. Worse for the high voltage battery packs, if any individual cells fall lower than others in the pack, as they discharge faster than the adjoining ones, they become damaged. This is why the Lithium batteries require balance charging. The charge needs to be monitored very well or the damage can result in battery developing gases internally, expanding the case and causing fire.
For solar applications the best battery is the lead-crystal type, these can discharge to 0V and still be charged again, regretfully they are very expensive at the moment. The Deep-cycle lead acid/gel types can tolerate deep discharge but will eventually sulphate. Electric pulse de-sulphators work and can recover the batteries to a reasonable health and extend battery life making the installation more economic.
I have a student who lives off grid and he is actually working on the wind turbine and PV paper at the moment, he has had very successful experiment over the last three years using economically feasible processes.
