I want to understand the idea behind suffix numbers or letters of Force Fields such as AMBER94,AMBER96,AMBER99,AMBER99SB,AMBER99SB-ILDN,AMBER03 ,AMBERGS ,CHARMM22, CHARMM27, CHARMM36, GROMOS 43a1, 43a2, 45a3, 53a5, 53a6 and 54a7 .
So, how these are referred?

Kalindu Fernando , I understand that higher number depicts the higher versions as well as to be used preferably. But I want to understand the idea of putting "that very specific numbers" in those force fields.
So, I think this answer would be more accurately answered by the developers of those FFs or who knows in-out of that particular FFs.
