The new EU General Data Protection Regulation is about to enter into force. How is it impacting your research projects, publications, application, etc? Do you have any specific questions that you don't know the answer to (including what is the GDPR and why should you care?).
Regulation no. 679 of 27 April 2016 on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data impose new important obligations on operators to ensure the protection of the fundamental rights and freedoms of natural persons and in particular of their rights to the protection of personal data.
It would be desirable to avoid double standards for the protection of one and the same right in two distinct situations (application of EU law and the exclusive application of domestic law) and the inclusion of a provision in principle in the Labor Code or in consumer legislation the obligation to inform the employee or the consumer of their rights in relation to such data
Thanks both! That's very useful. May I ask whether you are "scientists scientists" or "legal scientists"? I am curious to understand what is the level of GDPR awareness among non legal people.
From my perspective as a "scientist scientist" who has had to learn a lot of legal stuff really quickly around this, the biggest impact GDPR is having on research for me is the access to administrative data for research. Particularly in the UK I'm finding it's a longer application process for accessing data, for some datasets what was a 3-6 month process can now be 1 year. This isn't solely a GDPR issue, there are numerous other issues that are contributing to the backlogs, but GDPR is often highlighted and quoted as an issue by some government departments, universities, and data centres for data not being available or delayed.
It's also interesting from the previous comment around processing under research purposes having a privileged position. My experience is that is not how many UK organisations have interpreted GDPR at all, rather everyone is erring on the side of caution. In research I've been doing with 14-18 year olds in collaboration with other universities we all agreed that data collection and processing needed to be done under explicit opt-in, rather than the public-interest route. I don't think this has been helped by the ICO not giving clear/strong guidance for universities and researchers.

I have recorded similar concerns (e.g. sometimes it's not GDPR in itself but fear/misunderstanding of GDPR that causes additional delays) in other venues. One of the goals we have in the openaire.eu project is to create some guidelines/best practices about GDPR in the research environment. This is helpful and I will add links to these guidelines when they are ready!
