A very common standardized process of hygienization of sewage sludge is employed as a pretreatment of sewage sludge before application to agricultural land. There exist various methods of hygienization. Please have a look at the web.
After the hygienization step the sewage sludge is safe from the point of view of pathogens content.
There exist some other problems with the application of sewage sludge to agricultural land, for example, the presence of micropollutants.
Sludge re-use in agriculture has increased in many countries, but this practice must be associated with a knowledge of the pathogens present in these sludges.

Composting is one of the biological methods used in the hygienization and recovery of sewage sludge. To have good hygienic compost, it is necessary to maintain a temperature above 55°C for a few consecutive days during the composting process. However, it is difficult to create suitable homogeneous conditions that guarantee this temperature. In addition, the phenomenon of regrowth of pathogenic bacteria is a veritable problem.
