In terms of health literacy, this is a subject which has emerged in the 21st century. My recommendations are to: First, define the age of the subgroup, when you focus on literacy you will need to look at both developmentally appropriate curriculum and alignment to age levels. For example, research health literacy in 5-year olds is different from assessing health literacy in 15 year olds. Second, define the healthcare subject; obesity, dental hygiene, HPV, nutrition because not all measures work, new tools are emerging daily however, you might have to create a health assessment tool for the subject you are trying to evaluate. Check out the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality http://www.ahrq.gov/research/findings/evidence-based-reports/er199-abstract.html Third, check out the American Association of Pediatrics to determine what they recommend about the subject, here is a link which might be useful please read this entire article so you can understand all of the implication when focuses on children health and literacy assessment http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/124/Supplement_3/S327.full
I have also attached a powerpoint which provide several measurements for health literacy and pretty much summarizes my findings. Hope this helps.
Michael J. Ormshaw, Leena T. Paakkari, Lasse K. Kannas, (2013) "Measuring child and adolescent health literacy: a systematic review of literature", Health Education, Vol. 113 Iss: 5, pp.433 - 455.
We used the Newest Vital Sigms which had not been tested for validity in children at the time but had been used more among adults. I think we started it at kids no younger than 7. The questions contain numeracy applications and basic literacy component a: still even among most parents for one survey effort we conducted scores were usually low. Measurement for health literacy In children is a very important area for future research efforts to explore.
Perhaps their learning should be tested with adapted nvs measures which tailor knowledge expectations based on age or by adjusting score for related age impact on validity and appropriateness of the tool.
Also it could be re-written to only involve questions believed to be standard and commiserate with Age averages and comprehension norms. And More studies on children and their age as it relates to intellect and capacity for comprehension could be useful. Also a new measure may have been introduced since we conducted this study literature review and if not this is an important need which could help improve in the long term for many pressing public health issues.
