i interpret your answer António José Rodrigues Rebelo
Based on intelligence tests, which identify and assess the consummation of cognitive skills; and in the execution of problems, in real life situations, which mobilize cognitive skills in the cognitive process of looking for solutions.
Using one word, "cognition" cannot be sensibly or understandably (intelligibly) used to ponder or think about the WHOLE MATTER (issues) of "cognition". Cognition is multi-faceted (and you must know and see this, via the good research on the Memories); but, the big thing to know and realize is : VERY MUCH of this develops (changes, qualitatively) over human ontogeny (child development, 0 - 18+ y.o.) (this is THE Memories AS THEY ARE with the different "chunking", etc. for each stage/period/level of child development ) . One can really only conceptualize this (at best) ONE STAGE AT A TIME.
Even those immersed in knowledge of child development : only a fraction (say, a fifth) can be reasonably and logically, with soundness be considered. In addition to implying "cognition" is one thing that can be thought of alone is not tenable, it actually is absurd.
AND : Your question is about "matter" and about "energy" IS TOO VAGUE TO BE SENSIBLE, etc., even at any given stage/level/period of childhood
