The only advice that can be given without seeing your pictures is: align your SEM properly, when taking pictures follow manufacturer recommendations.

You need a high resolution SEM machine and proper dry sample to get good quality image. Good luck.

Magnetic materials are not a problem for SEM. Actually, it's much easier to work, say, with iron than with glass.

Instead of Au you can use Pt for coating. Pt coating is more useful for high resolution coating.
