This depends on which type LCs you would like to obtain. For example, if you have an interest from lyotropic LCs, it can be attached an aliphatic chain to your dye.

The simplest derivatives can be synthesised by alkylhalogenides interacting with Npy or N-amine centres of the dye-molecule.

Same can be used for columnar LCs, however, your dye should has a large 2D conjugated skeleton.
