I am starting a research on grid optimisation through reduced energy demand at residential level. Need some guidance in terms of practical information and methods to acheive it.
There are two main approaches for energy saving in power grid; conservation, and efficiency. In the former approach, the energy demand reduction is mainly achieved by wise consumption of energy and behaviors. In the later approach, re-engineering of equipment for higher efficiency is performed by engineers and industry specialist. Both approaches result in energy reduction (or NegE). Consequently, less energy resources, infrastructures, and investments are required. There are huge literatures that handles the enegy saving approaches and enegy management methods.
Less demand means smaller power system size which you call it less demand as a result and the other thing you need to consider is using the available and cheap resources more and load match it with your loads at real time. I suggest you should use HOMER simulation software for optimization and economics analysis and also sizing your system.

If your grid consists of generators , transmission ,loads use optimization methods with economic dispatch and software Mediea such as mathlab tools optimal power flow analysis try to use NIPLAN soft ware
othercwise your quision is not clear enough or you should add explains to it
