Ahmad, I think you're idea is well supported in the neo-institutionalist literature.
Check out the literature on knowledge orders and knowledge regimes to read more on the idea how certain forms of knowledge become more or less legitimate. (e.g. here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/261874818_Embedded_expertise_a_conceptual_framework_for_reconstructing_knowledge_orders_their_transformation_and_local_specificities)
I suppose you can link the question of legitimate knowledge to Suchman's concept of "coginitive legitimacy", just to name one.
Further, with regard to the aspect of "global context" that you raised, I'd refer you to the World Society Theory under the umbrella of new institutionalism which roughly argues that certain institutions have become globally dominant, e.g. Western ideas of rationality. (Which would link well to your question about forms of knowledge.)
