I am confused about the effectiveness of maximum power point tracking in Wind Energy Conversion Systems. My doubt is based on two things: a. wind, source of energy in WECS is stochastic in nature, changes suddenly. b. the turbine inertia, which will inhibit the turbine rotor to change its speed at a faster pace.

The turbine inertia for a typical 1.5MW wind generator is about 3-5 secs, which is long enough to have larger changes in wind velocity causing the shift in maximum power point. In such a scenario, I think a MPPT controller can only direct the DFIG rotor in the direction of MPP and it has no control over how fast the DFIG reaches to new MP point. (This is totally different to PV based systems where we do have some control on how fast the MP point can be achieved).

So, I just wanted to discuss on how existing wind farm are implementing MPPT controller and are there any ways to speed up the time a wind energy generator reaches at new MPP?
