Damon system brackets are eficient in treatment class1biprotrusion cases. You can treat these cases without the need of extrctions , but the shape of the archs will be more wild! Be careful with this!

The Damon system is a method of placing orthodontic brackets on the teeth for the provision of treatment to correct malalignment of teeth. Its manufacturers and its adherents among the orthodontists claim that it is more efficient and less demanding of the need for extractions than any other method. There is absolutely no evidence-based scientific proof of this. Nevertheless the claims are made, photographs shown and heavy marketing methods employed to convince the gullible and ignorant public, in order to pressure orthodontists to accept the spurious claims. The overall approach used by the Damon method can be used with virtually any other design of orthodontic bracket, with similar results.

Would non extraction not result in unnecessary widening of the arches? This would be my first time with these brackets and hence can you share some more in depth details of its use. I hope you have had some experience with this system.

All studys on selfligating bracket systems will show, that the use of selfligating brackets enables the orthodontist to reduce the time of the control visits, because arch wire changes can be faster. There seems to be a difference in oral hygiene; if selfligating brackkets are used there will be a slightly better gingival condition. Studys show, that torque control will be better if interactive selfligating brackets are used. if you use passive selfligating brackets such as Damon, you should select different torque values for each specific case. Finishing with passive selfligating brackets can be demanding.

Mr. Breuning, Currently i have no doubt but to use the same bracket prescription suggested by the author.

The use of different torque values are my main concerns.

It will work well if you learn how to use this system. But you have to be an experienced orthodontist to optimalize treatment results. The use of selfligation is no improvement by it self, you still have to learn how to use each system

I can confirm that in a controlled study the hygiene at the end of the orthodontic treatment was significant better. This was published in an abstract poster prestation at the EOS conference in Istanbul 2011. Which bracket you use is up to you, but generally we see far better results with the Damon prescription> In answer to Dr Becker I could add don t throw azay the cild with the bath water. Further studies have to be done. A significant approach was made by Hisham Badawi. I should confirm that you have to be an experienced orthodontist to start with this bracket and that your diagnosis is the most important factor in combination with a comprehensive treatment plan.

I am planning on treating my bimax protrusion case with this system because of better torque abilities and hence i was intrigued with its usage. But with all your valuable suggestions i have to rethink and reapply the biomechanic considerations of my case as i still lack much experience with this system but am keen on using it. The Damon system originally pioneered by Dr. Dwight Damon is one of the many self ligating systems available in the market today. This particular system is marketed by Ormco and has undergone a number of changes during its evolution. Although manufacturers make scientifically unsubstantiated claims regarding the reduction in treatment time and obviating the need for extractions, I personally feel that there is no scientific evidence to validate these claims. However, what is certain is that there is increased efficiency for the clinician in terms of reduction in 'chairside time' for each patient thereby potentially allowing us to see more patients and the fact that there may be decreased plaque accumulation in this system. With other parameters remaining constant (Prescription, etc. ), any system works as well as the Damon system in the hands of an adept orthodontist. Until more Randomized control trials are carried out to answer the question on treatment time and efficiency of its biomechanics, the debate will rage on within the orthodontic fraternity.

I recommend Damon SYSTEM. You should realise that this is a SYSTEM and it demands new way of thinking. It does NOT work if one just bonds Damon brackets and hope that it will work.

It's just that I'm quite against the trend of aggressive marketing resorted to by manufacturers without adequate scientific evidence.

But the main question of efficient management of complex cases still remains a challenge.

And also dear doctors let us not go into the marketing or publicity gimmicks of the system but stick to the technical and treatment oriented discussion thus making it more of a resource for students like me.

Also i have a further question about the length of treatment with these brackets? Are these of any help in reducing the treatment time drastically?
