Work-life balance is more associated with organizational commitment and turnover intentions than with quality of work. Are you specifically focusing on performance for a reason?
Work-life balance is more important to Gen Y employees compared to baby boomers. Generally, younger workers (40 years and below) value work-life balance more than older workers.
You can observe the diffrences between these different groups if workers in organizations.
I have found Lack of work-life balance related to higher levels of psychological and physical stress, which in turn can affect performance. As David Dunaetz says, it is also related to commitment and turnover intentions, which also tends to have an impact on quality and quantity of performance.
Organizations do need competent, motivated, committed and involved employees who are contented (being satisfied and quite happy-enjoying higher level of well-being). Lack of WLB will have a strong negative impact on employees first, second on organizations that employ them, and third on the entire society. Hence, to ensure WLB is not only an individual necessity of a particular employee, but also an organizational and societal necessity.
