I have been looking at teaching thinking skills to preschool and elementary students. While I often see visual perceptual, spatial thinking, and attention skills listed as some of the core cognitive skills, I find it quite confusing as to how they can be fit into (or where they lie within) common thinking skills framework such as Higher and Lower Order Thinking, Marzano's Core Thinking Skills, Bloom's Taxonomy, etc. Or are they intrinsically of a different dimension?
When it comes to visual perception and spatial thinking some persons do not have the innate or intrinsic skill to for example transform 2D pictures into 3D perceptions (which is one skill of special importance in laparoscopic surgery , see our paper)
The key processes at work in tasks of visual perception and spatial reasoning are "relational learning" and "pattern recognition". These core mental processes are, arguably, necessary for reasoning and understanding in any domain. If we can't recognize patterns or grasp how objects relate to each other, the ability to understand cause-effect relationships would become impossible. These executive functions and working memory processes have been shown to correlate strongly with children's reasoning abilities outside the context of simple cognitive tasks. For instance, children's working memory ability is a strong predictor of reading comprehension skills. Relational learning and spatial reasoning are strong predictors of math skill...to name a few
Posiblemente la clave esté en el aprendizaje por comparación. En la construcción de diferencias físicas que se transforman en diferencias cognitivas. Los espacios alocentricos y egocéntricos. La percepción visual necesita de transformaciones transmodales y la comprensión de distancia y dirección. La percepción visual se facilita cuando se integran a otras modalidades perceptivas pertenecientes a un mismo evento.
