I am designing an asymmetric supercap for which i have selected negative and positive electrodes having highest work function contrast. I have found several articles, stating the importance of selecting correct choice of electrode.
Though, i am aware of the fact that work function of a material plays very important role in electron kinetics, still i am unable to understand the physical significance of work function in deciding its operating voltage window.
Electrode interactions[1,2], commonly, narrow[2,3] the actual electrolytes’ electrochemical (stability[1]) window in (asymmetric supercapacitor[3]) cells, thereby SCs risk with (plenty and different) accelerating redox reactions, reducing the lifetime of practical devices for end-users' components (electronics).

The electron polarization definitely depends upon the work function and the applied voltage. However, my question mainly concerns the effect of work function on the total working voltage, apart from the bare applied voltage needed for electron transfer.
The work function is not[1] a characteristic of a bulk material, but rather a property of the surface of the material (depending on crystal face[2] and contamination).
