How does the reaction progress while taking a carbonate precursor in sol gel synthesis ?

I have read publications, wherein the sol-gel synthesis of LaMnO3 has been coordinated using citric acid and ethylene glycol with carbonate precursors. Kindly help me with explaining the chemistry behind the chelating process behind it.
