Time varying fields after a few wave lengths are propagated by particles or wave packets. The photons of Einstein's photo electric work and their gravitational counter part gravitons. A static field has infinite wave length. That should affect their properties
Once N number gravitons or photons leave their source with a radius Ra and move to a point B units away, that same N must distribute over the square of [B+Ra]/Ra times area at Ra. So, the area density of the photons (or gravitons) is inversely proportional to the square of distance. that means the energy transferred by photons (gravitons) between two objects is inversely proportional to square of the distance between them. But the potential (energy) of a static field between two objects is only inversely proportional to distance (not the square of distance).
Since force is the differential energy with respect to distance. In case of the time varying field it is inversely proportional the cube of distance. In the case of a static field it is inversely proportional to the square of distance. Although in case of electromagnetic fields the forces are perpendicular to direction of propagation. I think until found other wise, most will think for gravity the propagation direction and force direction are the same.
At distances much closer than two wavelengths wave properties dominate over particle properties (quantum uncertainty).

There seems to be confusion judging by some posts as to where energy resides in fields.
Where the energy changes reside when two particles with rest mass move in a force field in empty space at zero degrees absolute: Since it is at zero degrees absolute there is no black body radiation the space. Photons and by analogy gravitons of zero frequency have no energy by Planck’s law. Therefore, static electromagnetic or gravitational fields do NOT give or take energy to or from the empty space. Time varying fields can give to but not take energy caring photons or gravitons to the empty space. When the two particles fall toward each other they gain kinetic energy the space had no energy to give it is empty at absolute zero; therefore the energy comes from their rest mass and their potential is stored in the rest mass also they must produce photons or gravitons to make the change their motion produces in gravitational field.
When they are pulled away from each other, the force that pulls them must supply the energy of their change in potential including that of the photons or gravitons that change the field when they move.
