The attached photograph shows a crack (red colour) passing through element-a & element-b in XFEM mesh discretization.
'phi' indicates the level set (signed distance function) from the crack.
'si' indicates the level set (signed distance function) from the line which is perpendicular to the crack at the crack tip.
The standard conditions to classify an element as 'split-element is:
phi-max * phi-min

Dear Sandipan,
In case of this kind of element classification by level set you can either go for mesh refinement or if you don't want to refine your mesh you can check the condition: phi =0 & si =0 also as it occurs only in the correct crack-tip element.
