Hello,
I have a noisy optical source which exhibits relatively high relative intensity noise at C-band. I then amplitude-modulate it at 800 MHz sinewave, resulting in a noisy RF carrier. Later, I modulated the phase of this 800 MHz sinewave. After detection by a photodiode the information in the RF phase is extracted. Is there any way to connect the SNR of my AM signal (800 MHz) and the SNR in its phase? As in, how the noise floor of my phase detection is affected by the SNR of the RF carrier?
In this paper https://www.osapublishing.org/jlt/abstract.cfm?uri=jlt-35-10-1906 the author states that the SNR of phase detection goes as twice the AM SNR. Is this always the case?
