By sampling at a higher rate than necessary, more samples are taken within a given time frame. It helps you to sample your received signal at the center of the bit/symbol which improves your SNR significantly.

Everytime you increase the sampling time by two, you increase the SNR by 3 dB after filtering

Sorry, I have made a mistake, increase of not the sampling time by two but the sampling frequency of course, you win everytime 3 dB over the SNR ; this is well used in IoT digital processing
