Here are a few strategies that work in innovation:
Look to people/ideas completely outside the industry.
Deliberately employ people "not like yourself" - they think differently to you.
Listen AND act on what the emerging market wants from both you and for themselves.
Do not be restricted by current paradigm. Let innovation start without the baggage of current infrastructure and business models.
Be prepared to accept that the right way forward may be to spin off a new start-up approach with a different business model ; a large company is almost never capable of changing sufficiently from within. If the spinoff succeeds in a broad general sense (like the budget airline model for example), prepare for the wind down of the old company (or division) - far better to realize the assets in a planned manner and reinvest/reuse in the new model.
