Range of capacitance required (roughly in order from maximum to minimum, supercaps, electrolytics, tantalums, polyester, polystyrene, ceramic);

Whether it can be polarised (tantalum, electrolytic, supercapacitors) or non-polarised (others);

Maximum operating voltage and breakdown voltage (ceramics, polystyrene are high, polyester moderate, electrolytic/supercaps low);

Allowable equivalent series resistance and equivalent series inductance; and

Physical package size for given capacitance.
