I am working on a project where the odds ratio for a case-control study is reported as 0.5 [95% CI: 0.3 to 0.9]. One interpretation is that "the case patients had lower odds of the exposure than control patients" and another is that "the exposure is associated with lower odds of the outcome compared with non-exposure."  Which is more correct? Do you need to include the comparison to non-exposure or is the comparison between cases versus controls? Or is there another even better explanation? Thanks so much.
