I think I have an idea of what you are after, and I feel that your question is similar to the more general one of iconicity in language. Also related are the numerous attempts to translate body movements into music, or music into changing colours etc.

I am not currently working on this exact relation, but I have been thinking about the inverse one in the past, i.e. about visual rhetoric, the "grammar" of images, pictorial metaphors, gestural utterances and the like, and yes, also facial expressions.

But let me first stretch out a bit:

A basic condition of the human mind is that it tries to represent everything in the world as (hierarchies of) structures. We are able to perceive structures where they actually exist (like for example in trees, which we understand to consist of a trunk, of branches, twigs, and leaves), but our perceptual systems even enforce the detection of structures in purely random arrangements, which is the case in the imaginary constellations of the stars or in the "system" of roulette game outcomes. This tendency to perceive structure everywhere is the cause of our ability to invent metaphors and to successfully employ them, i.e. to mention something (for example travel) and to let the recipients understand that something, which is similarly structured (for example life) is meant (as in "We went through a lot of trouble").

If Stein compares the structure of narrative texts with that of graphical works of art, then this is little more than a metaphor. The proper question is whether it might be possible to further elaborate this metaphor, but why should we care? One could surely also find other analogies, e.g. that a novel is like the solar system, and the chapters are like the planets etc.

As to colours or shadings (which are just versions of the same colour with different degrees of blackness), we might come up with the idea (to give just one silly example) of linking them to phonemes, which are more or less "dark" or "saturated" or whatever. "Perspective" is indeed often employed as a metaphor for a background assumption or the knowledge that is used to interpret the limited amount of actually given facts (C.f. the movie Vantage Point, titled "8 Blickwinkel" in the German version).

What I want to say is that there is no universal structure which is represented in all human artifacts. A dictionary of correspondences between verbal and visual "texts" cannot exist. Rather tan that there are always partial structural similarities between any two entities in the world, and the possibilities to map the respective structural elements to each other (like chapters to frames) are endless.

Well, I see that I have most likely responded too hastily, because frankly I do not understand a word of the text above - except maybe that there are contradictions that in some ways resemble Picasso's combination of frontal and profile views of faces. I figure now I haven't understood the original question at all. However, this strange text above reminds me on recent attempts at artificial-intelligence created lyrics, which sound like genuine poetry and turn out to be sheer nonsense at a closer look.

I can show you a picture of a lake.

In writing I can describe in detail (hopefully fill you with a flood of imagined images) how it feels to dive into an icy mountain lake. How the initial crush of cold feels. I can tell you what in the water and what's on the bottom. Later I can describe standing back on the dock longing to find warmth.

With sound a recording I can let you hear all the things we miss out when seeing or reading about the lake.

Ich denke, Stein versucht teils über die Grapheme oder Schriftzeichen, teils über den Rhythmus der Sätze (Atem, Betonung, Tonwiederholungen etc.) mathematische Proportionen (4er, 3er Gruppen und deren Kombinationen) Abstraktion zu schaffen. Hier ist mein Versuch:

"Zwei Paragraphen, sechs Sätze, 46 Wörter. 41 Wörter davon einsilbig, nur wenige wiederholen sich. 13 sind Substantive. Die Verbfolge ist: is, means, went, placed, is, is.

Viele Wörter bilden Klangpaare. Die sechs Sätze bilden drei Gruppen: der erste Satz steht allein, füllt einen Paragraph, enthält drei Glieder. Der lange zweite listet drei Merkmale auf, und fügt einen Kommentar hinzu. Die letzen drei kurzen Sätze formen eine Gruppe. Die Zahl drei häuft sich.

In den sechs Sätzen bilden sich Wortgruppen. Der erste Satz gibt einen Rhythmus vor: 2 Wörter, 3 Wörter, 2 Wörter. Trägt man die Wortgruppen, deren Wortzahl pro Gruppe und pro Satz erkennt man den Rhythmus der Wortgruppen, welcher den Dreier-Takt mit Zweiern variiert, ihn aber zum Schluss wieder herstellt.

Dieser Rhythmus wird von den Klangpaaren überlagert, synkopiert und z. T. verklammmert.

Dies ist ein abstraktes Stillleben, eine Art von Lokalskizze. Besser eine Vignette. Sie steht zwischen "Lunch" und "Apples" in der Sektion FOOD und hat kaum Beziehung zum Titel oder den Umrahmungen. Bis auf cheese kommt kein Essen vor, und ob rest sich etwa auf Möhrenenden bezieht oder rest eher mit seat zusammenhängt bleibt offen. Der lange zweite Satz kann vielleicht sich selbst oder den ganzen Text meinen: die Liste scheint verrückt geworden oder ein Mischmasch zu sein. Das könnte eine Montage aus Textschnipseln (cut up) sein. Ein surrealistisches Gedicht, eine Form des automatischen Schreibens. Eine Montage von Wörtern. Ein sinnloses Experiment. Stein wird dies später rückblickend eher als eine Meditation über einen Gegenstand vor ihr beschreiben, als ein Versuch ihn neu zu sehen und neu zu komponieren.

Deutlicher wird der Versuch durch die beiden Negationen in der ersten und (steigernd) in der letzten Gruppe. Es widersprechen sich Wortgruppen oder Sätze. Ein weiterer Widerspruch besteht zwischen den Negationen und den beiden Universalisierungen von all this und All the time. Die doppelten Widersprüche stören jeden Versuch, sich eine Szene vorzustellen, etwa einen gemalten Tisch mit Mohrrüben und Käse, daneben ein Stuhl vor einem Fenster, durch das man auf die Wiese schaut ... Oder eine Geschichte: Gertrud und Alice erfreuen sich am Käse, an den Rüben und schmusen miteinander ..."

Kubismus ist eine Geometrisierung: Abstraktion von Gegenständen zu Quadraten, die Kuben darsatellen sollen ...

Thank you Lee Clawson, for the freezing moment. I can almost feel it, too. 7 degrees below zero outside. I am working on verbal sketches published in the 'US. Travelers describe their feelings when they see something strange. At the same time they imitate painters and graphic artists. That is impressionism. Stein tried to get away from that, she called it "post-impressonism", the Armory Show in NY 1913 and all that. She tried to do abstract portraits and scenes ("geographies") and to free the feelings of her readers like in the 'pails' bit.
