In an agricultural country, aside from adequately giving the farmers modern machinery and seeds, should agricultural research be given also importance to attain progressive agricultural economy? Would robust agricultural research contribute to uplifting the lives of farmers?
I believe that to achieve economic agriculture there must be a link between the farmer and the researcher. Somehow providing up-to-date science and training to farmers.

When research is conducted in such a way as to fulfill the country's needs, all citizens benefit from the money invested at a medium or long term horizon. The difficult part is to identify the area of research where return on investment is maximal. Ideally, this should be determined by agronomic or socio-economic considerations rather than political ones. Also, money should be granted to competent research teams that are committed to reach the objectives of their funded projects.
@Noel, yes robust agricultural research does contribute to uplifting the lives of farmers. This can be best exemplified by the success story of Indian Agriculture which got transformed from subsistence agriculture to a market-driven agriculture in the last 5 decades. Productivity of most food grain, oil seeds and vegetable crops increased significantly (>300% in food grains and oil seeds and >500% in vegetables) during the Post-green revolution era. This has all become possible due to robust agricultural research system operating under the aegis of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Research achievements have made it possible to let India come out from begging bowl condition to a condition of self-sufficiency, and finally to an export-oriented agriculture. This has led to livelihood security in each and every section of the society including farmers as well. Of course, govt policy also played a key role in reaping the benefits by farmers.
Mope edwin Malefane , Agricultural research has a vital role to place in improving the economy in many ways, As the world population increases, the demand for agricultural products increases to meet the current food demands. The current conventional way of farming cannot meet the demand for food, so in order to meet the demand for nutritious food and met with SDGs 2030 millennium goals ; Goal 2, "Zero hunger" there is cogent need of agricultural research institute that can collaborate with the stakeholders in Agric business so as to increase the productivity and improve the nutrition requirements of the agriculture products.
