What is 21st-century humanism? Alexander Ohnemus I suspect this is an interesting question but I do need clarification. I spent 20 minutes or so at the UN (first result) https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000227855
I am little better informed, however it does seem to be credited with amazing progress "it is a major success of humanism that...the progress is real: millions of people have been lifted out of poverty in the recent decades, more people are educated than ever in human history..."
or ridiculously claiming
"Most of humanity now also considers peace, not war, to be the normal state of affairs between and within nations.+
all this self congratulation, while even more trillions are earmarked for military spending than ever before... 21st-century humanism did all that and I was unaware of its existence.
So I go to the second result to get "enlightened"
A 21st century humanist endorses the aspirations of 20th century humanists (e.g. racial equality, the elimination of gender inequality, the elimination of world poverty, etc.), but we go one step further by incorporating the challenges of an aging world and the rapid advances in biomedical science into our purview of the demands of justice
If what I read is anything to go on to be 21st-century humanist, you must enter a bizarro world where the fruits of religious abolitionists and the enlightenment; equality, especially of opportunity, or the amazing economic transformation of capitalism get rebranded as the benefits of humanism. And a much darker side where the stupidity of the industrialization of our food supply with its inherent "autoimmune diseases" is somehow mashed up with transhumanism and right to be abused by big pharma and high tech.
Well I can't see any difference between 21st-century humanism and biblical teachings no offence intended;-)
Perdón si he cometido algunos errores en español.
The "spirit" central to humanism is a spirit that belongs to this world, it is a manifestation within the finite world of finite ends; whereas the spirit at the core of Christianity is God, and God is not found in the world of finite ends, but rather he is an absolute and eternal end beyond this finite.
I'm not sure what you are really asking with this question. By definition, all "humanism" is in contrast to God. When you say "Biblical Teachings" in today's world there are those who would confuse this terminology. There are some who "teach from the Bible" but what they are teaching is not "Biblical" it is humanism in disguise. Still, assuming you are asking about the God-intended teachings of the Bible, the answer to your question seems inherent within the question. Humanism, by definition, no matter how you dress it up, is a human-centric way of thinking. Humanism puts humans in control, humans at the center of the universe. By definition, humanism stands in contrast to God. The Bible makes it clear, and even someone who does not believe the Bible to be true or the Word of God can easily see this is true if they are willing to read the book, whether you accept it as true or not, the words of the Bible clearly state that God is in control. God is the center of the universe. God makes the rules and God expects humans to follow the rules. God allows free will, God does not force anyone to do anything, but that's an act of love on His part. Humanism, regardless of what year it is, pushes God aside and says "humans are in charge," putting it in opposition to God, no matter how friendly or worldly humanism claims to be.
Kale Riley Amen sister! I have no problem with an agnostic or atheist worldview, but it seems so stupid to replace God with us. We did this long ago with the Ptolemaic model. I understand that history repeats but ...
I am of the opinion that education in a religious spirit is getting closer and closer. Schools, in the 21st century, have less and less influence in the field of education, but in the part when they attend formal education. the problem lies in the cooperation between the school and the family environment, which more and more becomes an educational environment. Different religious interpretations by incompetent experts mislead not only children, but also entire families. An indicator is also the introduction of religious instruction in schools, in some countries of the Balkans, which do not have a secular system, but there is not much success in this field either, because social networks are much stronger and have a stronger influence on families.
The quick answer, humanism goes against Yahweh and exalts humankind. For elaboration, the contrast is highlighted in the biblical account of Cain & Abel, and the descendants of Cain who, going against Yahweh Elohim, began the process of establishing a system of belief that is contrary to what the Bible has to say about creation, life, its meaning, the fall and the restorative plan. In short, humanity was created with intention, with purpose. Therefore, humanity is required to make decisive decisions about out relationship with Yahweh Elohim and this, in turn, requires us to live our lives in ways that bring us closer to the creator of the heavens and earth …
