In general, there are visual effects, hearing factores, and sum of both. The visual ones is originated from the essential seed (unit) of  the family, and then the environmental impacts advances the experiences by offering the variety, that is more than the single unit. On the other hand, the phyisical effects of various sounds on ear-drums by itself, instictly could train the minds of children in different directions. Consequently, the sum of both variables is a hardworking creativity of the "mind & body" to create the depts and widthes of identity as a cultural perspective of a human kind, in early childhood, and in many levels and varieties, based on the personality and mental strength of each individual. As an old saying, "we are the human of our childhood periods".

Sorry I can't give a reference to a concrete article or thesis, but I would look into social psychology and group identity theory. I remember reading for my thesis that ethnic identity starts to crystallize around age 4 and that's when we start to see our "ingroup" and other ethnicities as "outgroups". I'd look up these key words in your library site or even just google scholar. I'm sure you'll find a lot of material.

I will pick up on the points you mention.  In my current study with children from 2 to 5 in Islamic preschools in South Africa I am finding that their navigation of the secular and religious aspects for identity development is tied to some sort of  cultural and emotional intelligence. I use the lens of children as social actors and  I guess this is giving analytical purchase to some interesting insights.

Hi Hasina, I can recommend this book: Gregory, E. (2008). Learning to Read in a New Language. Los Angeles, London, New Delhi, Singapore: Sage. Gregory, along with colleague Charmian Kenner and others also conducted a large study entitled Faith Literacies. Search her name and Faith Literacies and you should find plenty of papers that explore the interaction between religious and literacy identities and practices in families.
