Working with "the ethics of care" is a challenge for the students. They do understand the thinking, but they struggle with the actual application in to real life situations. Utility and economic questions seem to win the discussions in the end. There is a deep habit and tradition of understanding ethics in certain ways. How do you work with your students to understand and apply the ethics of care?
Above all, I must give them a comprehensive and clear idea of what I want them to accomplish, and then test what they have.

First of all I explain that ethics is not about “feelings” and that there are actual principles one may appeal to. Then I go over the main principles, giving examples of their application. At this point, I emphasize that more than one principle may be applied in specific situations. No situation is like any other, and each has to be evaluated on its own merits. It is only at this point that I start discussions and case studies, that is, after they have learned the language and made an attempt at ridding them of pre conceived ideas.
One of the most effective ways I have found of communicating the ethics of care to students is through case studies. It takes time to make sure the scenario and the ethical questions are realistic and relevant, but it helps to engage the students in an integral way. With that said, I also agree with Claudia, that establishing clear principles first and providing a solid foundation for their application is essential.

I like cases, but, as you say, they need to be clear and realistic or else they tend to create more confusion than help. I often ask my students for real life examples that we can look in to.
