How do you wish to be remembered for your graduate supervision?
In lighter vain.
answering from the student's perspective.
- The one who does the dissertation self for the student.
answering from the perspective of the Parent of student.
- the one who makes his/ her ward something like Marie Curie (the revered Physicist, Scientist)
answering from the perspective of the .
- The one who enhances supervisor's productivity for no costs or hassles
I actually mean none of these. But used the satirical style of our late student Jaspal S. Bhatti

The supervisor and the student form a team. Both are neither inseparable (nor always integrated?) nor connected as the wheels on the two sides of an axle.
However, they remain, in a way indispensable to each other.
Both have similar objectives. However their roles are different. But though the methodology to achieve the objectives is same, the commitment of providing required resources for the two may be different, and subject to differences between the two.
Helpful, encouraging, tolerant, understanding, patient, and knowledgeable.
The supervisor loves to be remembered.....
not only by the student researcher,
but by the whole world,
and also when one reflects,
over one's accomplishments,
as the coauthor of the esteemed publication,
where the student researcher had a significant role.

I cannot but agree with your very helpful response.
I would like my advisees to say I was accessible, I answered their questions or direct them to someone who could, I explained things clearly, I was encouraging, and I challenged them to do their best work.

Michael, the supervision process is a two way process: one in which the supervisor advises, guides and provides a sense of direction as well as pastoral support for the supervisee and one whereby the latter learns and provides a platform for the supervisor to learn new and interesting things about the research topic under investigation. Looking back at supervision provides for me a set of both possibilities and a framework of continuous sharing of ideas and the art of the possible. Interesting.
