I am doing electrochemical experiments in molten salts between 600-800C. I need a platinum electrode, but I cannot afford to have a 25cm length of platinum wire coming out of my furnace. My hope is to weld 3-5cm of platinum to another metal (such as tungsten) to connect to my potentiostat.
You don't! You just need to connect them, so why not do it mechanically with a crimp?

How about spot welding? At least it works fine for Pt-Pt connections. But if no special mechanical strength is required - then just use twisting of wires - the simplest way, I guess.
I have used method, similar to described by Vadim S. Gorshkov
to weld two wires of different nature for preparing thermocouples. By the way, you can control welding current by changing distance between two electrodes in salt solution. Experimental probes will show optimal distance.Such kind of welding produced a lot of small salt particles in air, so don't do it in the proximity of optical or other clean sensitive surfaces.
As I understand you simply need to extend wire. Simply twisted and spot welding and/or crimp it. As it was mentioned above also. Combination of all 3 will survive forever I think. Maybe I missed problem because I do not see any problem.
