It would be interesting to hear if there are any practical differences, if any, in how guidance and counselling are done at your university/school. How do you understand the differences between guidance and counselling?

Personally I find that counseling is helping a person from deviation back to right track whereas guidance is helping a person by providing him / her advice how to address or approach an issue i.e. not necessary from deviation back to right track. E.g. a student with smoking problem needs counseling & when a researcher stuck in his / her research needs guidance.

Guidance refers to an advice or a relevant piece of information provided by a superior, to resolve a problem or overcome from difficulty. Counseling refers to a professional advice given by a counselor to an individual to help him in overcoming from personal or psychological problems.
Counseling is a process of empowering by building insight and self awareness and guidance is showing the way, giving the advice and explaining the solution of a problem in a direct manner.
Guidance, I believe, is more general such as answering a question or pointing out a mistake or redirecting someone on to the correct path. Counseling is a bit more involved. In other words you spend more time with that person, understand their needs, concerns and questions and formulate a plan so that they can acheive their goals. This may involve multiple meeting sessions.
