There are some interesting challenges for DAS systems in fields of agri-biophotonics and/or biophotonics - from vibration impact studies on the roots of growing plants to sea fauna acoustics monitoring, but researchers usually prefer array of single sensors or quasi-distributed sensors. Or maybe you know the examples with the DAS application? Thank you!
I think everything is due to noise and great difficulties with the interpretation of the results. Distributed fiber optic measuring systems developp in our laboratory. In the adapting to real applications, the problems of signal processing arose sharply, simultaneously with the change in the design of the sensors. For example, we try to use a vector phase sensors.
Dear Timofey Aleksandrovich Efimov , thank you for your opinion. Sometimes DSP is a real bottleneck. And sure it depends on the exact case. But maybe some systems might work for simple cases where the users do not need all those features of dynamic strain measurements...
It depends on the application. For example, coherent, phase-sensitive systems with additional elements (such as weak FBGs) can provide acceptable results with high sensitivity and relatively easy interpretation of the results. But in this case, the system becomes quasi-distributed. Fully distributed systems are really hard to use for acoustic-field monitoring.

Does this mean that DAS' sensor with relatively weak Rayleigh scattering (unlike Q-distributed with WFBGs and their Fresnel reflections) needs tight contact with the vibrating object to 'feel' the frequencies, and it is not possible in the case of acoustic-field monitoring?
Dear Yuri Konstantinov, in addition to the weak signal, the data interpretation from simple DAS Rayleigh sensors is difficult as it was mentioned by Timofey. It is too difficult to restore the acoustic field. I could recommend the following papers and references in it :
