A dissertation project entails a long period of time in terms of research design data collection and dissertation submission and dissemination. It also often entails asking for support from colleagues, who may then get interested in the topic. How do we deal with colleagues who pick our brains for our process and ideas and then might publish similar findings a shorter time period as a smaller project? We need collaborators, but also need to avoid muddy waters about idea ownership... Thanks for your advice!
Good question. Probably I would say because you have stakes in the quality of the research at a personal development level, to be upfront about collaboration in the beginning. If the other researcher becomes too attached, it could cause conflict. Suggest they start their own project in a different scope. It's a tough gray area though...
