I would like to ask colleagues who have completed or are completing Mixed Method Research dissertations, especially in applied linguistics, and L2 learning through literature if you have advice about how prepare for the viva voce, or oral defense of your dissertation. I am thinking about issues of scalability and replicability of classroom research, and complementariness of methods... Thanks to J.D. Brown (2014) for his book Mixed Methods Research for TESOL.
Be honest. If you have not had resources to study L2 learning via video, admit it. If you found a small mismatch between advocated methods and yours, spell out how you overcame it. If scalability of your solution does not really appear to be a future problem, say why you think so. Expect that the topics of reliability and replicability will be asked, and address them head on. Underline what is original in your thesis-book. Highlight what is significant.
What I did was to prepare answers to the list of commonly asked questions, record and rehearse them a few days leading into the viva day. If you'd like the list, I can send to you. Best of luck!
