The altmetrics score takes into account the interactions between the general public, via social networks, and the research community. It gives another value to scientific research, it allows the research community to measure even with uncertainties the level of societal appreciation. In this context, I would like to know its effectiveness.
Altmetrics deals with research papers being searched or read by people on social networks. As such they may be popular and widely read on the internet but may not be appreciated or judged or cited by others for their content. When all the existing metrics have some flaw or the other, Altmetrics too has an imaginary value.
Altmetrics complement citations. An article may receive very few citations but could garner huge attention on social networks.
