Our citrus industry can be related to the concept of ecosystem in Biology course. Here, I can explain that the citrus tree is a home to various insect and a substrate to some mosses; in which these insects and mosses may develop ecological relationship with one another.

There are definetely plenty ways of doing so, mainly through projects. Judging from the experience in my home country:
1) Agricultural sector (fishing, farming, oliveoil production, pottery, food industry, natural products etc)
2) Environmental activities, eco-tourism, sea protection and relevant products
3) Local architecture and local construction
It depends highly to the level of students of course and the relationship with the curriculum.

In our everyday life we use glass, ceramics, metal knife, plastic, papers, and soap materials, etc. These products are produced in the industries following some basic thermodynamic laws and reactions. Usually the products are prepared under high temperature treatment except the plastic and paper materials, soaps. The transparency, quality, free from defects and its strength of the product depends on the slow cooling process precisely. Such industry can be the best places to clearly demonstrate the basic science teaching.

Exposure to real life industries is important to relate the theoretical knowledge to practical aspects in terms of operations, process/ design and impact on health, safety, environment and society.
There are few initiatives for Informal out-of-school engagement with Science and Maths: National Council of Science Museum, India is committed to spread scientific literacy; incorporating innovative ways to communicate science to the young scientists/students through industrial talk, visit and science exhibits developed locally by curators; Vigyan Prasar (DST) and NCSM developing science clubs for students in schools to enhance students’ practical learning.
In our country, the pharmaceutical industry can be considered as a "true" chemical industry which has become reputable & succeeded in selling medicines to Europe as well as covering many local market demands.
While teaching industrial chemistry, I explain that most of the pharmaceutical industries "worldwide" are of the batch type so as our industries here. Students are required to understand, through examples, the characteristics of an industrial batch plant together with what items of equipment it will have & how these tools are operated.
A typical chemical industry must have a section for R&D "research & development" and our local pharmaceutical industries do have that from information I gathered from our graduates who work there. Therefore, students are required to know examples of the duties of the R&D section in an industry and the type of "applied" research that is carried out there.
Students of the industrial chemistry course ought to know the chemical names, the structural formulas, and the function of the most famous drugs such as Aspirin, Panadol, paracetamol , penicillin, amoxicillin…etc.
Even though it is an introductory course, students do not appreciate its value until they graduate & become fortunate enough to be employed in a chemical industry "pharmaceutical or other industries such as paints, plastics, soaps, detergents…etc.".
