What indicators do you think are most relevant or important for you to measure your own professional success?
Many of us are college/university faculty, some work in industry, yet others are students. There are many indicators for each professional category. Which ones do you use for defining/measuring your success?

1. Teaching ability, reviewing students feed backs.
2. Publication number so and published journal impact factors.
3. Citations numbers.
4. Reviwer for journals.
5. Enthusiasm in the field or subspeciality.
6. Multidisciplinary meeting performance
7. MSF ( multi-source feed back; self,colleague peers, including juniors and other admin staff and of course patients feedbacks)
8. Ability to cope with stressed environment
9. Keeping calm and polite in stress
10. Attending courses conferences
11. Ability to give a talk in a meeting, etc..
If you are a faculty member, the number of papers published, the number of graduate students you supervise, your position in the department including tenure status, how much grant money you being in to the department/university, how well you get along with other faculty and staff are some measures of professional success. If you are in the industry, perhaps the number of patents, the number of internal research publications, your position in the organization and your salary are some measures.
It depends but objective measures include
1) publications (conference and journal) - how many, what type of journal or conference matter
2) Grants. funding, donations - did you get grants for your scholarly work from any organization? how much?
3) Student feedback - this is helpful to evaluate your teaching. If most students give you bad feedback, you are probably not teaching well.
Through achievements in education, research, and community-service in addition to professional development.
For me, the most important thing to evaluate my professional success is the possibility of applying my research in real life

My measure of my professional success is the extent to which my student understands my recent information, the nature of the human relationship with me, and the quality of the research that I have done and evaluated by the arbitrators who evaluate it.
The level of my professional (and any other type) success is sky-high - it can not be measured by human beings.

Respect and scientific status are the best measure
The extent or level at which I am able to academically impacted on my students through the teaching and other learning processes despite all distractions and constrains within and outside the school environment, my contributions to knowledge via my research works, my ability to contribute my quota to community development locally and globally.

When I measure my professional success, I always found myself at the datum line.
I will not make a list of "criteria" of success, in my opinion, this is unproductive. For me, the criterion is a very simple thing when I hear: "Well, if X does not come up something, then we have no chance to solve this problem." At the same time, X is not “frightened” by the task, but joyfully “grabs” it ...

The impact of my research and teaching on the national and global scale
I used to rely on objective indicators like a number of citations, interest of colleagues at the conferences, granted patents, practical usage in research and its industrial use, commercial success. Certainly, a non-objective indicator like a self-satisfaction is important to me personally, though it doesn't matter for anybody else.
* I see as long one keep learning, he will succeed more, and remember this quote all overtime, keeping the eager to learn more whatever he reached:
"Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Till your good is better and your better is best"
* I think those are success measurements tools to be fulfilled:
1) Upgrade himself and keep searching for more skills to gain, learn more whatever place he reached in his lab or community.
2) Eager to learn more and more all overtime, even from who less than him.
3) Accept his failure moments and learn from it so not to drop in it again.
4) Keep his passion and interest to what he learns, interest and love what you do in research, so more research publications laugh to you, do not deal with as it is work and or source of money.
5) Plan for his life, put high dreams but applicable, and run after his dream specialty always and keep make researchers in it, as long as he keeps himself upgraded with all its new approaches, algorithms,... he will be better always.
6) Try always his researchers to be helpful for community, not just for normal review publications, try more on original ideas from real patients or original data sources, or collect papers for new SR/MA idea to be a perfect algorithm for this topic, do not repeat/duplicate ideas with no benefit for community.
7) Keening to help, guide and teach more researchers, what you learn will keep you reading and knowing the new era of research skills from questions you will be asked form young researchers that will deal with you.
==> All that = SUCCESS measurements
* Measure his success upgrade, how much he increases his skills, how much he try to add for community, and not compare himself with others, as success has some limits, each one of us has his own available material to learn from, source and access of courses and information, supervisor or guider to help him
So success is to increase from himself, and not to look to others what they reached, and keep silent as you cannot reach them, he does not know what sources or good changes given to them, so keep playing on himself to be better, is the real success.
* To professionally measurements, will be researcher h-index in Google Scholar, which comes with more citations to his research papers, as most reliable source, but this point needs more work, patience, and longer duration to achieve, so keeping learning to continue success tell he sees his works will start help community, as long he keep research for community benefit.
* Do not think impact factor (IF) of journal helps much in this measurement, as journals all overtime change its IF each year, so not reliable source to depend on, as many good papers published in low IF journals, as regrading to the point of that specialty journals have lower IF, while general journals have higher IF which do not easily accept specialty idea papers
* So better measurement is h-index of researcher, which depend on number of citations your researchers take, as no. of citations mostly describe how much it can benefit community and trusted from many researchers to use it in their citing papers.
* I am still MBBCh candidate and in my last year in medical university, so will still face more events in my life to mature more, but till now, that what I see right in my small journey -2 years- in research in my lab -Online research club- "ORC" which adds a lot to my life and make me know the route for how to try to help my community more, not only by medicine but also in science and researches.
* And happy that I found my route specialty "ENT/ORL" earlier before I graduate and started to learn its clinic and surgery skills from my 4th medical year from great supervisor ENT doctor from 3 years, and aiming to continue working more in ENT researchers with the help of my great research lab supervisor in ORC.
The number of positions I am eligible to apply for is one sign shows I have acheived success in my profession. The other item is how much I feel confident with my skills. So, both social and personal aspects of professioncy are important.

For. e.g. if a student complete his exams he feels satisfaction. A doubtful candidate does not.

Success is measured by the positive reactions and the effects of work and achievement on the life of the individual and society, in proportion to the shortcomings of the previous.
The individual should not repeat his mistakes at every new stage and always share ideas with others

To me one of the ways of measuring my professional success is the number students and other people I have been able to influence positively by helping them to be the best they can ever be.
Like a pedagogue I think that the professional success are the results of my students and like a researcher the professional success is that mine papers to bring something original in my interest field of math.
I set goals that either meet or exceed what is expected of me, and I work to reach those goals no matter what. I may encounter setbacks or obstacles or I may make mistakes, but I always try to adjust and improve my work habits so that I can reach my goals. I consider success to be reaching my desired outcome.
Self satisfaction , students success outcome and research publications are an important points to measure the success ; in addition to the several valuable and constructive comment that were mentioned above by our RG colleagues
The result of what you are able to impart to your student(s) and the contribution you made to the society through publications and it application in the real life will determine your professional success
In my view i measure my success by simply looking at my juniors who take me as their role model and take suggestions from and actually apply all that in their real life.
And the other thing is by looking at my patience while guiding them also defines how good it have become by time

As a clinical educator, my greatest joy comes from being able to see the result firsthand, growing confidence, compliments form peers and seniors and most of all when the learner takes other learners on board and passes on the teaching. That to me is a definite indicator ofmy professionalsuccess.

My own first criterion is that I take the road so as to "I will succeed" and, could say that "I have succeeded". First of all, I should be able to say this to myself.
My second criterion is Karl Popper's Basic Scientific Principle that is Falsifiability. According to Karl Popper the Falsifiability defines the inherent testability of any scientific hypothesis.

Paul: There are a few ways that I measure my professional success. First, I am quite proud of earning three college degrees. The path to a college degree is usually long and hard. The balance of marriage and children add to the challenge of a college degree.
Second, I am proud of my 24 year career in the military. I entered the military right after my undergraduate degree. I really enjoyed my military career and I worked very hard to be successful. I was promoted four times and earned eight awards.
Third, I have been promoted from Assistant Professor or full Professor. My yearly evaluations have been very positive and make my proud of my teaching abilities.
I enjoy what I am doing - whether in publishing, teaching, success in winning research grants and awards and also having my opinion consulted by professional bodies and the media. Success can be deceiving if it does not need to happiness and satisfaction.
Self-satisfaction is the measurement of professional success ..........either that is teaching, research, publication etc.
Professional success as a teacher can be guaged by the performance of the students, and I am very satisfied with the same. As a clinician professional success can be measured by your number of years in practice as well as the popularity acheived by your good work and relationship with patients.

I have over 48 years experience in teaching, research, disease investigation, planning, and administration in veterinary science. I worked very hard to obtain four university degrees, such as BVSc&AH, MVPH, Ph.D., and DSc. By the kind blessing of God, I retied as University Professor and Head of Veterinary Public Health. During this long period of life, we published over 601 papers and authored 9 books. We also received several awards like Distinguished Teacher Award, Life Time Achievement award, International Achievement Award and others. I am very happy that my students are settled in several foreign countries. Further, our work is frequently cited by many academicians in their papers, reviews, monographs, and books. I received great respect in academic life. In order to recognize my pioneer contribution in science,The Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists has instituted an award on my name ( Prof.Mahendra Pal Zoonoses Award) that is presented every year to the scientist who did significant research work in zoonosis. Many thanks to admire my last 48 years continuous contribution in science. In order to achieve professional success in life, one has to adopt the principles of hard work, honesty, sincerity, and dedication. I learned these principles of success from my grandfather and father. I always teach these principles to my students so that they can also get success in their academic career. I advise that we should help every body. Keeping this in view, I recently launched Narayan Consultancy to give free technical advice in Veterinary Public Health and Medical Mycology to the scientists of poor resource nations.
