I am looking for a purely experimental method to determine the mass matrix of a ship in three degrees of freedom using manoeuvres in open water.

I just found:

Skjetne, Smogeli, Fossen:

The zero frequency added mass coefficents can be found from semi-empirical formulas, simple engineering rules of thumb or strip theory.

Do Thanh Sen, Tran Canh Vinh:

For a particular ship, it can be obtained by experimental method. However, the experimental method is limited and cannot solve all added mass components.

I am looking for a practical method which is better than estimating all 9 parameters at once by non-linear optimization.

I would be very happy if you have any suggestions.
