How do you determine the mechanism responsible for the increase of cell proliferation caused by the polycation?

I am a chemist and I performs routine tests of cytotoxicity of new polymers that I am synthetising. One of the received by me polysaccharides based polycation causes a significant increase proliferation of fibroblasts (crystal violet and MTT assay). What could be responsible for this effect? What could I do to identify the biological phenomenon causing this effect? Has anyone watched something similar in case of the polysaccharide.
